Sean Pickens #3

Sean Pickens was born in a hockey family.  His father, Jim, played it at UMass Lowell.  In fact, his brother Matt and his mother Deb also went to UMass Lowell.  Pickens is the first one to break the mold.

“I wanted to go to a big school,” Pickens said.  “I’m interested in the FBI, so I’m doing criminology and criminal justice and I want to be in D.C.  I either want to do policing or anti-terrorism.”

Last year as a high school senior, Pickens’ team made it to the D1A state final at the Boston Garden.  He was a Hockey Night In Boston All Star in 2011 and 2012, and won the Mass High School Hobey Baker Award last year. The freshman forward brings the Terps a lot of speed, and he’s a guy with a pass first, shoot second mentality.  His playmaking ability can be utilized all over the ice.

“Speed burner who can play any position up front,” Head Coach Bill Krampf said.  “The guy has a motor that just won’t quit.  Always on the move, always high energy.  Loves to compete, which will come in handy during the MACH schedule.”

That speedy skating began at the young age of three, when Pickens began to watch his father and brother play, and he immediately knew he wanted to get involved.  Pickens learned to skate by pushing a crate all around the ice.  Skating at a young age gave Pickens some fond memories.

“Skating around Christmas time,” Pickens said when talking about his earliest skating memories.  “Santa Clause would come.  Those are probably my earliest memories.”

Pickens lives in Wakefield, Massachusetts, where he is a big Bruins fan.  His favorite player is Brad Marchand.  Pickens not only played hockey in high school, but played lacrosse as well.  He enjoys playing NHL video games, hanging out with his friends, and is a big country music fan.  One of his favorite movies is “This is the End.”

Most of all, Pickens is just happy to join a new team and keep playing competitive hockey, and meet some new people along the way.

“I’m just excited to keep playing hockey,” Pickens said.  “Hopefully we make it to Nationals, because I know they went last year.  I’d be excited for that.”
